The Serralves park and museum in Porto have long been on my radar, but it was only this spring that I visited for the first time. What a joy. The origin of Serralves Park dates back to 1923 when the Count of Vizela inherited the Quinta do Lordelo estate, the family’s summer residence on the outskirts of Porto. Serralves Villa, built in the 1930s, is a unique example of Art Deco architecture. According to the Serralves Foundation website, “the Serralves Garden, as designed by Jacques Gréber, was considered to be one of the first examples of gardening art in Portugal of the first half of the twentieth century”. The park, villa and modern art museum are an absolute must if you’re visiting Porto. The outdoor artworks, particularly those by Joana Vasconcelos, are outstanding, and I also loved the Sky Mirror by Anish Kapoor.
